dance - a sport or an art?

okay, so I've been doing this bloggy thing for about a month or so. and i can't seem to get any readers. so i decided - maybe i need a topic for each post, to make it more organized. my past posts have just been randomocity ... about what's going on in my life, my new favorite song, fashion, my polyvore, blahblahblah. and as much as I like telling people about what's going on in my life, I'm pretty sure you don't care that much. and plus, a controversal topic brings in more readers, and i like to hear other people's opinions on things. therefore, the topic for today is ....

Dance - an Art or a Sport?

sport - (n) an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often a competitive nature.

I have been a dancer for about 10 years, and have trained in ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, and pretty much any other genre you can think of. and get this straight - we train and work as hard as any athlete. it looks easy, which makes it so much harder. tell me, what baseball player do you know who can achieve those leaps? or fouette turns?

and have you ever seen an overweight ballerina? i sure haven't. some people say "well, ballerinas don't eat. they're all anorexic." which is so far from the truth. I am mainly a ballerina, and lemme tell you, there is no way i could live without food, much less dance without food. and who says there aren't anorexic basketball players? cheerleaders? soccer players...? how could dancers be so physically fit and strong if they did not work just as hard as athletes? we're not talking about your high school dance team here, which, for some people is the only exposure to dance they've ever seen.
in the definition of sport, it also mentions sports often have a competitive nature, which is so true with dance. even if you don't do competitive dance, there is always competition going on with who's the "best" dancer, who can do a tour jete, etc.

art - the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

as much as I firmly believe that dance is a sport, I also believe it is very much an art. It is definately a way to express yourself ... for example take this piece from last summer's season of So You Think You Can Dance by the great genius Mia Michaels.

what makes dance different from sports, is a volleyball game could never give a message that strong.
dance is also one of the most beautiful things in the world. there is no athlete who is as beautiful and graceful as a dancer.

to a person who has never set foot in a pointe shoe, this may look so effortless. but do you know what pointe shoes are made of? they are not the same as soft, leather ballet slippers. you think that dancers can just magically balance on their toes, right? wrong. pointe shoes all contain a box at the front which are made from a very hard material, almost like wood. thus the many injuries and pain a ballerina faces. to work on pointe, you must build up so much ankle strength, which is why if a person who has never stepped in a pointe shoe before tried to dance with them on, the results would be disastrous.

So, what do you think? Is dance a sport or an art?

I had a Michael Jackson themed party and I thought my friends and I would just be dancing and singing to MJ music all night long, then at about 7 o'clock my door bell rings and it's my dance teacher with three guys saying "Surprise! Happy birthday!"
The three guys were her friends and one of them happened to be on the show So You Think You Can Dance and he happened to be home from LA this weekend and he happened to show up on my doorstep on my birthday.

A+

today i am ecstatic. why? BECAUSE I GOT AN A+ ON MY LIT ESSAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :O :O :O I've never had trouble with lit or anything, but I am still overjoyed. Literature is actually probably my best subject, most likely because it's my favorite. I love writing, and this year I've figured out I actually have a talent for it. Two out of three essays I've done this year have been read out loud to the class. Which in most cases would be embarrassing for some people, but I like it when people can hear my work : ) . The essay that I wrote was about the book The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom, which is now one of my all time favorite books because it is just so flibbergibbin (?) amazing.

You heard it here first people, Marissa is back on Polyvore. Yes, yes it's true, and I am OBSESSED. I had one like a year ago and forget the password, totally forgot about the whole website, blahblahblah. I made a new one about 4 monthes ago, didn't use it til now, realized how many people were using it, fell in love.

off to the oscars, in oscar

Just a few I have made in the past couple days ; )

If you wanna hear a song to put you into a really good mood, listen to Hey, Soul Sister by Train. I love Train and I'm so glad they're back.

new moon

I went to the New Moon movie premiere last night, and I have to say, I was impressed.

Jacob Black, ow ow.
And OMG, I want Alice Cullen's wardrobe!
LOVE the scarf and the gloves over her shirt. And this dress is adorable! There was also a sweater that she was wearing at the end with red gloves that was so cute.
Dakota Fanning had like three lines? It was this big hyped up thing that she was in it haha.
But overall, the movie was AMAZING.

livin' la vida loca

today i'm sick again ... blehhhhhhh. my sister has caught it too. we're both feeling much better though! i like being sick like this because i get to miss stuuuuuupiiddd school. i slept til 11:44 (exactly). didn't do much ... just sat around reading magazines and stuff. ohohoh and i found an outfit to wear for Thanksgiving! it's adooorable. i'll post pics. i listened to this new band fun. (http://www.myspace.com/fun) they had some cute songs - I liked All the Pretty Girls. They totally remind me of The Beatles (I only like like, two songs by the Beatles - please don't shoot me).
this afternoon my little sis and I made my birthday party invitations while listening to an old Ricky Martin CD we found : ) it was funnnnnnnnnn

so while reading Teen Vogue I came across this spread (Escape Artist, pgs. 142-149) and I LOOOVED some of the stuff in there. The Alexander Wang romper on pg. 142 looks like something I wore for 4th of July this year .... the Kate Spade dress on pg. 147 is SOCUTE<3 href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Nbg9em5DY7CDcMq5ogm4B6DB1NsNyMYIAgbYdCPQx2K1caOGXFNHLA0Nnli1ttkJMQRrRqxL5ZM2iJEmyBuzER-qoExlVlTZuxeubFe5b0dcrNDcO6VqwJwH09O1UVeUnDfD2TgSmGa6/s1600/stsl06-tropical-florals-and-nautical-stripes-0911.jpg">
It's nice to see clothes that are actually wearable for a change.

something else I noticed in Teen Vogue (yes, I will refer to this magazine in pretty much every other sentence. it's like my Bible. this is also something I do regularly in life too.) was my horoscope for November. It reads :

With almighty Mercury firing you up on the 17th,

you'll have the guts to make a life altering decision.

Announce the news immediately- once people know,

they can help you move forward.
Hmmm ... yesterday was the 17th. I didn't do anything too life altering, just sat home all day reading and watching TV. I did make this blog though ... does this mean it will take a life altering effect on me? Hey, that would be cool. As long as it's a good effect. Maybe I'll be the next Tavi or Rumi! :D That's be fantasticallllll : ). But who knooooooows.

something new

I went home sick yesterday, and stayed home from school today : ( . But I actually like being sick, well not the being sick part but the staying home from school part : ) . It's funny how you go to school to get smart and learn things, but I usually come up with my best ideas when I'm not in school. Like this blog!!! : ) I am a fashion obsessed girl and I'm loving the fashion blogs featured in the November issue of Teen Vogue so I decided to make one myself. I named it The Purple Tutu because, well purple's my favorite color (oh and pink :D) and I'm a ballerina, hence the tutu part of the title. All I blog about won't be fashion, but it will probably be a great segment of this blog. Hope you enjoy : )

From Alexander McQueen's Plato's Atlantis.

Okay I know this is a couple months old, but can I just say, wth? Those shoes look like some sort of mutated animal.

About 1:17 the girl's top reminds me of a surfer.

The song is excellent to walk to though! I love it, it goes perfectly. Reminds me a bit of Vogue by Madonna, ehh? ; )

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I have just been exposed to nevershoutnever! I mean, I knew about them before, but I had never really listened to them. Christofer Drew is kind of a genius! His music is so happy :D. It kinda reminds me of Owl City. But Owl City is the king of happy music.

Well I guess I should probably tell you who inspired me to create this blog. You don't think I thought of it myself, do you? Tavi's blog ( http://tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com/ ) is phenomenal. I don't know how she does it! She's only my age ( I think maybe even younger ). I absolutely adoreee her bloggity and most of my stuff was inspired by her.
